Sapphire
Signifying purity, trust and loyalty, Sapphires have long been prized for their beautiful deep blue hue. However, sapphires are also available in a wide variety of other colours including pink, yellow, orange and purple.
Sapphires, like rubies, are part of the corundum family, characterised by their excellent hardness, exceeded only by that of the diamond.
Derived from the Greek word “sappheiros”, sapphire means 'precious stone'. The most valuable stones are those mined in Kashmir, with their characteristic deep, intense blue with traces of violet. However, most blue sapphires come either from Australia or from Thailand, whilst other sapphire sources include India, Burma, Ceylon, Thailand, Vietnam, Australia, Brazil and Africa.
