Jewellery Care Tips

Pearls

Pearls are very delicate and will be permanently damaged by cosmetics containing alcohol or acids. Apply perfume and make-up before putting on your pearls and let it dry first. Do not use jewellery solutions to clean pearls, and keep them stored in a separate pouch or box to avoid scratching, helping them to maintain their lustre.

Pearls are usually strung on knotted thread, which although highly durable is susceptible to stretching and wear. Therefore, over time, you will need to have your pearls restrung. As a guideline, if you wear your pearls weekly or more often, you are probably going to need to re-string once every couple of years. If you are wearing your pearls once a month or less, then re-stringing every three or four years will usually suffice. If restringing is delayed, the process can become more difficult as the thread can deteriorate, dirt accumulates, and then both can become stuck in the drill holes of the pearls. To assess whether your pearls need to be restrung, look carefully at the thread. If it is bright white, they probably do not need re-stringing. If the thread is greasy, turning grey or you can see an accumulation of dirt, especially near the drill hole of the pearl, it is probably time to have them re-strung. To arrange to have your pearls restrung, either contact our customer services team, or bring your pearls into one of our boutiques and our expert staff will be happy to assist you.
