Birthstones
With its roots in the early civilisations, the concept of birthstones appears in cultures both ancient and modern, from ancient Babylon and India to modern Europe. Each month is assigned with its own birthstone which is said to hold spiritual significance, or simply be lucky for people born in that month. In addition, each gemstone is attributed with certain qualities which are said to be reflective of character of the people born, or events which take place in that month.
Birthstones are therefore popularly given as birthday or anniversary presents, adding personal significance to a gift of beautiful jewellery.
Various calendars are used to assign birthstones to months or signs of the zodiac. The calendar below is the most popular in current use. Simply click on the month to read more.
